Every year, Cleveland Road holds internal auditions for students from years 4, 5 and 6 to become members of 'Cleveland Road Dance Company.' There is a huge passion for dance in the school, a fact reflected in the 160 names on the list to audition for the 20 places available. After two rounds of auditions the final students were chosen, based not only on their dance ability but also their commitment to learning, teamwork skills, creativity and overall positive attitude.
We are now busy working hard for two competitions, the Winter Arts Festival in February and the Great Big Dance off in March, if we are successful after an initial video round. The theme of this year's Winter Arts Festival is the elements, and we will be using dance to tell the story of a farming family who become refugees due to the sudden lack of rain. Some of the children have first-hand knowledge of moving to a new country and all of them understand the problems refugees are currently facing across the world, so we are using this knowledge to embody the range of emotions that such a story evokes.
