Cleveland Road Primary School

Our Curriculum

Welcome to the Cleveland Road Primary School Curriculum pages. We hope that the material you find in these pages will be informative, interesting and useful and would encourage you to come back and visit them regularly. We are always planning amazing learning opportunities for our children and love sharing them, not just with our community, but beyond it, too.

Curriculum Intent Statement

Our creative curriculum aims to ensure that all children receive a broad and balanced learning experience that inspires in them a commitment to life-long learning. We believe creativity is vital when enabling pupils to achieve high standards and that, by being creative, children learn to think for themselves, become adaptable and learn key skills for life. A creative curriculum can motivate and engage pupils and enable them to become independent and confident learners, so pupil leadership is an important part of our learning journeys.

Our curriculum places books and reading at its heart. Quality texts teach us about ourselves. They help us to pose big questions about who we are and about the world we live in. Literary works help learners to use their imagination, enhance their empathy for others and lead them to develop their own creativity. Quality texts provide a study of rich language and opportunities for self-expression; they can help learners to develop their understanding of other cultures and awareness of “difference” and can help children to develop tolerance and understanding as they explore universal themes such as love, war, loss, friendship, loyalty, insecurity, family.

Whilst complying with the legal requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum and the Primary National Curriculum, our curriculum has been designed to go further, recognising, celebrating and developing each child’s uniqueness and individuality, considering the children’s prior experiences and placing them at the centre of everything we do. We aim to provide the children with meaningful learning journeys within and across subjects that equip the children with the personal qualities they need to succeed in life and to help them to become both critical and creative thinkers. We aim to go beyond the experiences of the classroom to make sure that our children are offered the richest and most varied opportunities that we can provide, embracing all that our local community and capital city has to offer, whilst also seeking opportunities to develop national and global links.  Our aim is to enrich every child's school experience by creating an environment in which they are encouraged to succeed and be the best they can be.

Every child in the Clementswood Federation is a unique individual. We welcome and celebrate diversity and recognise that, through engagement in a wide range of creative and performing arts, the children will be given opportunities to express how they feel about themselves and about the world in which they live, providing them with valuable and meaningful ways to find their voices and positive ways to support their wellbeing, creativity and confidence. Children’s learning is underpinned by the teaching of basic skills, knowledge, concepts and values. We actively seek enhancement opportunities to engage all learners and believe that learning should be fun, explorative and investigative and should promote children’s curiosity so that children are keen to try new experiences and seek new knowledge.

At Cleveland Road Primary, this cultural capital prepares children with the essential knowledge and skills they need to build their futures. Our commitment to providing a values-based education includes a recognition and celebration of our British Values and the nurturing of a rights-respecting learning community.  Through this, we aim to provide learning experiences that promote confident, self-motivated pupils, eager for lifelong learning.

As part of our commitment to respecting the rights of each person in our community, we are on a journey to decolonise our curriculum and deconstruct systemic racism. We are committed to valuing diversity, promoting equality and tackling discrimination. By critically interrogating the actions of our predecessors and developing a deeper understanding of how the past has shaped our present lives and communities, we seek to understand the challenges faced by people in Great Britain and around the world today, while also recognising and celebrating the many perspectives and positive contributions made by individuals and communities, particularly in relations to the ethnic groups within our school community.  We want our children to be inspired by the contributions and accomplishments made by others and to have a sense of belonging within the school and the wider community.   We want our children to know that their culture and heritage is equally valued and that they have the right to achieve success in their lives.

Our ambition, for our children, is to ensure they have the knowledge, skills and understanding of themselves, others and the world so that they can lead successful and fulfilling lives.
